Power Up Gaming Volunteer
Power Up visitors can immerse themselves in this hands-on gaming experience, featuring the very best video games and consoles from the past 50 years. They can play against friends in multiplayer showdowns, rediscover their childhood favourites or test out some of the latest next-gen virtual reality experiences. Volunteers in this interactive gallery have the opportunity to connect with these different generations of gamers, sharing their experiences and celebrating this common interest.
To support one of the busiest galleries at the Science Museum, we are welcoming a team of new passionate volunteers, helping ensure a memorable experience by answering questions, sharing information about the history of gaming and helping us to manage the most popular consoles. Volunteers will also be delivering object handling sessions in the space, with a small selection of rarer objects from the history of gaming.
We have a range of volunteering sessions available for this role on weekdays, weekends and evenings, giving the opportunity to volunteer, with breaks included, for a morning (10.30-14.00) or afternoon (13.30-17.00) shifts, as well as evening during our Lates (17:45-21:30) sessions.
New volunteers will be able to volunteer on a flexible weekly basis for a fixed period of time, during July and August 2024, or on a permanent-basis. Alternatively, you will also be able to join the team on a permanent flexible basis, returning to the role every school holiday period (end of October 2024, December 2024, mid-February 2025, and other busy holiday breaks across the year). Ideally we would like volunteers to be part of the team for a period of at least 6 months.
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:
- Learn about and share information with the public about the games and consoles.
- Engage visitors and encourage participation.
- Demonstrate games to Power Up audiences.
- Deliver object handling sessions with a small collection of specially chosen objects.
- Organise with your Supervisor to provide information about your availability.
- As a volunteer you’ll learn about our Health and Safety Policies, procedures, and risk assessments, allowing you to take care of your own personal safety and that of others
- A passion for interacting and engaging with the public, connecting to a wide range of people from different backgrounds.
- An interest in video games.
- An understanding of the need to be accessible to all visitors.
- A collaborative, team-focused approach and willingness to learn.
- We ask all our volunteers to show inclusive behaviours, valuing everyone’s contribution, and promoting a culture of openness.
If selected you will be invited to attend an informal Taster session on either:
Wednesday 10 July (18.00-20.00) or Thursday 11 July (11.00-13.00)
Successful volunteers will then be invited to attend a full day induction and training session on Saturday 27 July (10:00-16:30)
If you have not heard from us by Monday 8 July then unfortunately your application was not successful on this occasion, and we encourage you to apply for other volunteer roles in the future.
