Barts Heritage is an independent charity formed in 2017. The charity is the custodian of the Grade I listed North Wing and Henry VIII Gatehouse at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in the City of London. Barts North Wing houses two of England’s most important interiors, the Great Hall, and the Hogarth Stair with its large paintings by William Hogarth.
Our project Sharing Historic Barts has seen the repair and conservation of Barts North Wing, delivered alongside an engagement programme to enrich the wellbeing of hospital staff, patients and their visitors, and the general public. Works began in January 2024 and the building will re-open in October 2025.
We are recruiting volunteer Visitor Experience Hosts to join our team from October 2025 and help us to welcome visitors to the building.
When Barts North Wing opens in October 2025 it will be a free, non-clinical space on the site of the hospital for staff and patients to visit for respite, to bring their visitors and for space away from the wards. Through our heritage inspired wellbeing programmes we are also supporting the NHS staff of St Bartholomew's Hospital and giving them opportunities to take part in a range of activities. We are also supporting the hospital in other ways such as running patient family days, socially prescribed activities for patients, and providing free patient activity packs.
We would like to recruit people with a range of experience and backgrounds and we encourage applications from everyone. No previous experience in the museums or heritage sector, or knowledge of the hospital is required!
We provide full training, supervision and support.
Individuals who:
- Are over the age of 18.
- Are keen to learn about the heritage of the North Wing and hospital.
- Are welcoming to everyone regardless of their age, race, gender, sexuality or background.
- Have a positive attitude and willingness to help throughout their volunteering shifts.
This is a unique opportunity to join a brand new team as we open the restored building to the public, and open it regularly for the first time. We are also unique as a heritage building on the site of an existing hospital.
