Action for Race Equality
ARE’s mission is to end racial inequality. We believe that the contribution of all communities makes a nation, builds dynamic local communities, generates wealth and improves well-being. We champion fairness, challenge discrimination and pioneer innovative solutions to empower BAME communities through education, employment and enterprise. Our activities involve working with Government, business, public services, BAME organisations and the media.
ABOUT US:

R2S matches ethnic minority female and male volunteer role models with young people to provide positive inspirational and motivational workshops, alongside sharing stories of their journey to succeed in their chosen careers. Routes2Success will reach 600 ethnic minority young people to provide positive role models from similar backgrounds, supporting with careers advice, entrepreneurial skills, making positive choices and guidance to overcome obstacles and those who are most affected will have dedicated mentors.

WHY OUR WORK MATTERS:

Our work looks to create better outcomes for ethnic minority young people both in school and in their future lives. The following statistics illustrate the importance of our work:

  • BAME children and young people in custody accounted for 52% of the custodial population, whilst only making up 18% of the 10 – 17 population (2020).
  • Black Caribbean children are over-represented by four time in PRUs when compared to the national population’s ethnic breakdown.
  • The number of permanent exclusions increased by 71% in the UK between 2013 and 2020, with Black Caribbean students five times more likely to be excluded.

THINGS WE ARE PROUD OF:
Between 2019-2022, 572 children and young people were engaged and completed the programme, with a total 57 workshop sessions in 19 schools and alternative education provisions, of which 74% were secondary and 26% primary. 72% of the participants expressed that they felt more confident about their future after attending the sessions and 70% said that they were more likely to continue to further education.
