Trans Legal Clinic (TLC)
The Trans Legal Clinic serves a dual mission: firstly, to provide free essential legal services that directly benefit the transgender community, and secondly, to offer enriching career opportunities and work experience to students from underrepresented backgrounds. Our overarching vision is a society where all people have access to the legal resources required for gender self-determination and where gender diversity is not just accepted but embraced, with trans+ people equipped with the necessary legal tools to navigate the world in their affirmed gender.
ABOUT US:

The Trans Legal Clinic is the first trans-led specialist gender identity legal practice in the UK. At its core, the Trans Legal Clinic is a human rights practice because Trans+ rights are human rights and without the influence of trans+ and non-binary people many of the human rights which are enjoyed by our cisgendered counterparts would cease to exist as we know them today.

Our services include support for legal processes involved in social transition, such as name changes, gender marker updates, and applying for gender recognition certificates. Additionally, we offer advocacy and legal services in areas such as housing, discrimination, and public law, each intersecting with gender identity legal issues.

TLC is a grassroots initiative founded by a dedicated team of volunteers. We also offer a variety of volunteering opportunities to make meaningful contributions to social justice and equality while building invaluable work experience and career development opportunities.

WHY OUR WORK MATTERS:

Trans+ people across the UK still face immense barriers to accessing justice for themselves. This is aggravated by the fact that many trans+ people at some stage in their transition are required to go through 'social transition' - the process of changing one's name, gender markers, pronouns, and other personal details among not only friends and family, but also the institutions and providers of goods and services with whom they engage on a day-to-day basis. The process is confusing and complex, and can often be distressing and even traumatic.

These challenges are amplified when one considers the disproportionate levels of discrimination, harassment, and abuse faced by trans+ people in their day-to-day lives.

Through the way we operate, the training we provide to our volunteer group, we have created learning and development opportunities and a platform for people to make a difference at the local or national level.

WHAT WE LOOK FOR IN OUR PEOPLE:

Dedication , Motivation, Team Players.

People who will persevere to create a positive outcome for the community we support.

We look to recruit volunteer students and alumni who share our commitment to social justice, legal innovation, and inclusivity.

HOW WE ARE DIFFERENT:

We are able to provide a free service by teamwork, perseverance and commitment, which has lead to positive results for those who needed help.

An exciting facet of our program is our corporate partnership with one of the UK's top commercial law firms. This relationship affords our volunteers the exclusive opportunity to work directly with senior solicitors and partners, providing invaluable career and networking experiences.

We are made up of Trans+ people, LGB and other allies.  All are welcome.
