Vegan Society
The Vegan Society's mission is to make veganism mainstream. We're working tirelessly to make veganism an easily-adopted and widely-recognised approach to reducing animal suffering and environmental damage. We do so through peaceful and factual dialogue with individuals, organisations and businesses. We achieve this vision and mission by providing information, supporting and advising individuals and health professionals, caterers, manufacturers, and influencing policy makers. We also fund vegan initiatives set up by members and supporters, and work with volunteers and partners towards making our vision a reality. We work with the media to help reinforce a positive view of veganism and to help a larger audience see that veganism is a rewarding, enjoyable and viable lifestyle.
ABOUT US:

Our long-term goals

1.  Improved vegan catering, nutrition, education and agriculture; encouraging government, public and private sector bodies to adopt and reward sustainable, healthy and compassionate lifestyles.

2.  Greatly increase the number of people trying veganism and remaining vegan, because they believe that:

  • Animals have a right to life and freedom
  • Animal exploitation also negatively affects human justice (global food distribution issues, etc)
  • Animal farming is not sustainable and is severely damaging to the environment
  • Balanced vegan nutrition is healthy.

Ambitious but achievable goals that will ultimately make a huge difference to the future of animals, the planet and us. Here's to a brighter future for all.

WHY OUR WORK MATTERS:

Two key initiatives helping us realise our long-term goal of a vegan world are: (1) encouraging more people to give veganism a try; and (2) making the vegan lifestyle easy to follow.

How we're doing it:

1.  Publicising the philosophical reasons for being vegan. People are most likely to stay committed to veganism if they believe it is wrong to exploit other animals because, like humans, they have value in their own right.

2.  Promoting the benefits of the vegan lifestyle by:

  • Encouraging more people to adopt it and making it easy for people to follow it
  • Advancing the development and use of vegan alternatives to all commodities derived from animals
  • Promoting knowledge of sound nutrition and interest in veganism as a complete and healthy diet
  • Promoting vegan agricultural methods as a means of both safeguarding global food supply and avoiding environmental damage
  • Campaigning for the legal recognition of veganism as a protected belief within legislation
  • Driving to achieve policy change socially (citizens playing a key role) and through practice (consumers influencing the marketplace).
OUR VALUES:
What do we want? Simple: a world where humans do not exploit non-human animals. A world where animals are free to exist in their own right. We promote a lifestyle that excludes, as far as possible and practical, all forms of exploitation of - and cruelty to - animals for the purposes of food, clothing or anything else. We also want a just world for humans. A world where resources are utilised in a sustainable way to ensure all current and future generations are provided for - a world where no one goes hungry. At the heart of the sustainability and food justice agenda is plant-based food production and consumption: veganism.
THINGS WE ARE PROUD OF:
The Vegan Society is the oldest vegan organisation in the world and was founded in 1944. At the establishment of the Society, founder Donald Watson and his wife coined the term ‘vegan’ to describe the lifestyle of what were then called the non-dairy vegetarians. The word ‘vegan’ was created from the first and last letters of ‘vegetarian’.
In our Volunteer Impact Report 2023, we also found that 96% of the volunteers surveyed feel highly valued by their main contact.
WHAT WE LOOK FOR IN OUR PEOPLE:
  • Great organisational skills
  • Experience of coordinating people
  • Experience of working to specific dates and deadlines
  • Good time keeping
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to motivate people around the topic of veganism
  • Ability to stick to branding
  • Ability to read emails in a timely manner and translate tasks into actions quickly
  • Ability to report back on activities

HOW WE ARE DIFFERENT:

The Vegan Society works to help more people become vegan with confidence, encourage more trusted Vegan Society Trademarked products to be available in shops, and take veganism to the mainstream. It provides information and guidance on various aspects of veganism for new and potential vegans, caterers, healthcare professionals, educators and the media. It also co-ordinates a variety of campaigns to raise awareness of the lifestyle.

The Vegan Society runs a mentoring scheme to help people who would like to become vegan called the Vegan Pledge. The number of Pledgers has doubled in the last year, with over 1000 people taking the Pledge each month.

Our multi-disciplinary Research Committee consists of over 25 academics pursuing research on a range of topics within veganism.
