Collections Digitisation Volunteer - London Museum

What You'll Do:

As a Collections Digitisation Volunteer, you will support with the digitisation of the stored object collections in the Printed Ephemera, Library, and Photographs stores.

There may also be the opportunity to assist with the digitisation of the stored collections in the Dress & Textiles store at a later date.

The role involves:

• Handling objects in our stores.

• Using photo editing software to photograph objects and carry out basic editing of images.

• Updating our collections database when photography is complete.

Why You'll Love It:

This is an opportunity to gain skills and experience working with a large number of museum objects whilst contributing to the digitisation of our collection.

The museum will:

• Provide an induction and the training needed for this role, including object handling, using Capture One software and Mimsy XG database.

• Provide guidance and support while volunteering.

• Reimburse the volunteer for expenses for travel and lunch of up to £12 per day.

As part of preparing for the move of the collection to the new museum at Smithfield, we are auditing our stored objects, making sure they are numbered and packed correctly. These objects are also being photographed when necessary and the new images are uploaded onto the collections database.

What We're Looking For:

Previous experience of working or volunteering in a museum is not required, and we do not need you to have any academic qualifications.

To get the most from this role, you should have:

• An ability to handle delicate objects with care.

• Confidence working on a laptop.

• An interest in photography and digital imaging.

• Attention to detail.

• An interest in Printed Ephemera, Photographs, Books, and/or Dress & Textiles collections.

• Ability to undertake repetitive tasks

The deadline for applications is 3rd of January 2025.

An informal interview will take place the week of the 13th of January for shortlisted applicants, and questions to consider will be supplied in advance. Training for the role will be provided on the 27th or the 28th of January, and you would need to available for training at our London Museum Spaces site (150 London Wall, EC2Y 5HN) on one of those days.
