Qualified English Teacher

What You'll Do: 

We are looking for volunteer teachers for a minimum commitment of 10 weeks, to deliver English classes to refugees and asylum seekers in the Epirus region of Northern Greece. The ideal candidate would have experience teaching English as a foreign/second language and would possess a strong understanding of or passion for the context we work in. Experience in delivering educational activities in this context is a strong advantage.

 

Your role would include:

  • Planning and delivering lessons for classes that can range from A0 (illiteracy) to B2, taking into account individual differences in level within each class
  • Preparing class materials and assessments
  • Empowering students with interpersonal  – and life – skills; and incorporating these skills into lesson planning
  • Completing various administrative tasks such as tracking attendance and communicating class updates to the students
  • Ensuring student engagement and progress
  • Working closely with the Education Manager to ensure the programme is being delivered to the expected standards of Second Tree
  • Participating in various community engagement activities so as to maintain relationships with students outwith the classroom context such as: picnics, community lunches, sporting events, etc.

 

Qualifications:

You must have a degree in teaching and/or Certification in English language teaching (TEFL/TESOL/CELTA or equivalent).

 

You should be able to:

  • Care for people: the interests of the people we work with should always be your first concern
  • Work independently and in a team
  • Have strong communication, interpersonal and writing skills
  • Communicate in an open, honest, direct manner
  • Manage a wide range of tasks and intense workload effectively and efficiently
  • Be dependable, and willing to adapt when necessary 
  • Be willing to enforce strict classroom management
  • Be able to give and receive feedback in the most straightforward way

 

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience working in the refugee context
  • Experience teaching low-level literacy students

In certain periods of the year, demand is extremely high, and the volunteer houses might be full. If you have the means to pay for your own accommodation, please let us know. We would still be happy to host you if space is available. However, in a situation where the volunteer houses are full, this would allow us to offer a volunteering opportunity to someone that cannot afford to pay rent.
