Rainbow Sisters group volunteer

What You'll Do: 

Rainbow Sisters is a supportive, welcoming and confidential group open to lesbian, bisexual and trans women, and non-binary people seeking asylum. The group meets a real need for a safe space and has enabled some members to understand and celebrate their sexuality or gender identity for the first time.

 

Rainbow Sisters is part of the charity Women for Refugee Women and has an in-person meeting for members every Tuesday, during term time, from 2pm to 3.30pm in the Old Street area. Some weeks the group hosts visiting speakers/workshops covering topics including mental health, campaigning and drama/the arts.

 

We are looking for a queer volunteer, to help with running the group every Tuesday during term time from 1.30pm to 4pm starting Tuesday 24h September 2024. We ask for a commitment of 6 months minimum.

 

Tasks will involve:

• helping the coordinator Nikki set up and pack down the meeting space

• helping members to enter the building

• chatting with members

• helping to facilitate sessions.

 

There is scope for the volunteer to run their own workshops if this interests them, but is not a requirement. We provide volunteers with an induction, supervision, reflection meetings, socials/events, training (i.e. safeguarding) and travel expenses

What You'll Learn: 

You will learn about the UK asylum system and the specific difficulties LGBTQ+ women seeking asylum face in the UK.

The situation of LGBTQ+ rights around the world.

You will have the opportunity to attend different workshops run as part of the group on topics such as campaigning, mental health and creative arts

What We're Looking For: 

We are looking for a queer woman (ideally a woman of colour) to support Nikki in running the Rainbow Sisters group.

Someone with a lot of empathy but also a good sense of humour and a positive outlook. Someone who is proactive and is not afraid to voice their ideas.
