What You'll Do:

Gain valuable insight and understanding of the day-to-day lived experience of people affected by dementia, enabling them to continue to ‘be themselves’ and live well, through regular one-to-one meetings.

  • You will be carefully matched with a person with dementia and visit them once a week for around 2 hours. The service is flexible around your needs and those of your match.
  • Activities are led by the person with dementia: you'll enable them to participate in social and recreational activities, helping them to keep doing things they love. Your support gives them the confidence to take part and to value their own abilities, talents and potential to contribute and achieve.
  • We provide references (after 16 visits have been completed).
  • We reimburse all out-of-pocket expenses, including travel
Why You'll Love It:
  • You'll meet interesting people with unique histories.
  • You'll know you're making a really meaningful difference to someone's life.
  • You'll learn new skills and strategies.
  • You'll gain first-hand, exceptional experience you can list on your cv.
What You'll Learn:
  • We provide full training, including Understanding Dementia, Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults and Data Protection.

    Your supervisor will provide ongoing 1-1 support; we ask you to keep in regular touch with them, discussing your experiences and any changes, issues or queries.

  • You'll be a valued part of our wider Dementia Support Service, gaining understanding of the health and social care context, and will be offered opportunities to engage, feed back and complete further training if you want.

What We're Looking For:

If you:

  • Have a committed, flexible approach;
  • Are an empathetic person with good communication and listening skills;
  • Want to learn new skills and understand the lived experience of dementia;
  • Want to make a really meaningful contribution to someone's quality of life;
  • Like being part of a great team –

                                                                                             Then this role is for you!

Please note:

  • We take up a DBS (criminal record) check for all volunteers in this role.
  • We ask for a minimum commitment of 6 months once relevant checks are completed.
