Mental Health and Wellbeing Volunteer

What You'll Do: 

We are seeking compassionate and motivated Mental Health and Wellbeing Volunteers to support individuals in the criminal justice system who are going through rehabilitation, as part of a project ACAA runs.

This position is particularly suited for 3rd-year undergraduate psychology students or individuals currently enrolled in a Master’s or PhD programme in psychology, along with recent graduates who are looking to gain meaningful, hands-on experience in applied mental health support.

By volunteering, you will help create a positive impact on the lives of offenders by promoting mental well-being, supporting their rehabilitation journey, and contributing to initiatives that aim to reduce stigma and improve access to psychological support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct Support: Provide basic emotional support and active listening to offenders during rehabilitation activities.
  • Well-being Activities: Assist in running or supporting workshops, group discussions, and well-being sessions designed to promote positive mental health.
  • Observation & Documentation: Record observations and feedback (while maintaining confidentiality) to help the team better understand participants’ needs.
  • Awareness & Signposting: Help individuals access further mental health resources or professional services when appropriate.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with supervisors and team members to ensure consistent, ethical, and compassionate care.
  • Ethical Practice: Always uphold strict ethical guidelines, including maintaining confidentiality, obtaining consent, and respecting participant boundaries.

What We're Looking For: 

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in at least the 3rd year of an undergraduate psychology programme or pursuing a Master’s/PhD in psychology, having recently graduated or professionally pursued work in mental health
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to build rapport and engage sensitively with people
  • Empathy, patience, and active listening skills to provide supportive care
  • Reliability and professionalism, with the ability to maintain confidentiality and follow ethical guidelines
  • Willingness to work both independently and as part of a team

Desired Qualities

  • Previous experience in support roles, mentoring, volunteering, or mental health-related activities.
  • Familiarity with basic psychological needs and challenges faced by vulnerable populations
  • A genuine interest in rehabilitation and mental health.
  • Flexibility and openness to learning in a challenging but rewarding environment.
