Volunteer Site Emergency Maps Designer

What You'll Do:

What is the role?

The RAF Museum is continuously developing its emergency response plans and we would like to enhance our ability to quickly respond to any emergency by creating site maps with all critical information required by emergency services in an easy to read and graphical way.

The role will be for a project led by the Operations Team in London. The successful candidate will be liaising closely with the Operations Site Manager and will help to develop the site maps that will be used when responding to an incident.

RAF Museum London is comprised of six aircraft hangars and various smaller buildings.

What will I be doing?

Develop each hangar’s map to highlight:

  • The main walls, doors and access points
  • Emergency door location and type
  • Call point, hydrant and fire extinguisher locations
  • Main hazard locations
  • Create a digital version and a physical version of the maps that can be contained in each Emergency Grab Bag for the Incident Team Leader to use

How much time would I need to commit?

It depends on prior knowledge and skills with small projects and map design.  The project will require approximately 4 hours of on-site familiarisation and survey followed by a few hours per week (either remotely or on site) to develop the maps.

Why You'll Love It:

What’s in it for me?

  • Become part of a great team of volunteers and staff
  • Meet new people and have new experiences
  • Discounts in our gift shop and café
  • Free access to the Flight Zone and similar attractions on site
  • Travel expenses reimbursed up to £14.50 per day, in line with our policy
  • Free entry to a wide selection of other museum and heritage sites and exhibitions nationwide.
What You'll Learn:
  • Gain experience with developing site maps for a large and complex site
  • Gain experience with the underlying principles of emergency response plans
  • Be an observer for the 2025 annual live exercise organised in cooperation with the London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Services
  • Character reference for future employers

This role is perfect for you:

  • If you have skills with design and CAD software (or equivalent)
  • If you are studying or have recently graduated from design or architecture
  • If you can work independently and follow a brief
  • If you want to gain professional experience supporting a critical project
