Volunteering can open doors to incredible experiences and sometimes, it leads you underground, into the heart of wartime London.

I’m Shamini, a third-year Adult Nursing student at City St George’s University of London. Alongside my studies, I’ve had the privilege of volunteering as a Front of House Discover Volunteer at the Churchill War Rooms, one of the most fascinating historical sites in the city.

If you haven’t visited yet, the Churchill War Rooms should definitely be on your list. Tucked beneath Westminster, just steps from Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, these rooms once served as the secret underground nerve centre for Winston Churchill and his team during World War II. Today, they’re part of the Imperial War Museums and offer a remarkable glimpse into Britain’s wartime leadership.

How I got involved

I first discovered this opportunity at City St George's Volunteering Fair in October 2024. Among the many stalls, one in particular stood out, the Churchill War Rooms. Growing up in Sri Lanka, where the impact of war was part of my reality, I felt a strong personal connection. I signed up on the spot. The process moved quickly: orientation, a short interview, and a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, since the role involves engaging with children and vulnerable adults. After a thorough induction, I officially joined the team and began my volunteer journey.

Typical day in my role 

As a Front of House volunteer, I’m often the first point of contact for visitors. I work one of two shifts, either 10:00 to 13:30 or 13:30 to 16:30, and during that time, I welcome guests, answer questions, and share fascinating facts about the exhibits. Using laminated info sheets and pointing out unique artefacts like Churchill’s pocket watch, his siren suit, and military uniform, I help bring the space to life. I also guide people through exhibits, ensuring they feel comfortable and get the most out of their visit. No two shifts are the same. Each day brings new faces, stories, and sometimes surprising conversations. It’s never dull and often, it’s deeply moving.

More than just history

This role has given me more than knowledge of Churchill’s legacy. I’ve developed skills in public speaking, customer service, and teamwork. I’ve learned how to communicate with people from all walks of life, and I’ve gained a deeper appreciation for history. Not just as something we study, but as something we connect with.

Some of the most powerful moments come from visitors who share their own family stories about fathers, grandfathers, or uncles who served in the war. It’s in these moments that history becomes human. And it’s helped me reflect on my own experiences and those of others from war-touched countries like mine.

If you’re considering volunteering - do it! Whether it’s at a museum, a hospital, or a local charity, you’ll find opportunities to grow, connect, and contribute in meaningful ways.

For me, volunteering at the Churchill War Rooms has been more than just an extracurricular activity. It’s been a journey through time, through stories, and through the hearts of those who lived it.
