Hours per week 3 hours
Location A range of wards, departments and community health settings in and surrounding Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Homerton Row, London, E9 6SR
Description

Gathering patient and service user feedback is a top priority for the Homerton. We were the first hospital in the UK to use a hand-held survey device to get almost instant information about a patient’s experience in a particular ward or department. We continue to use an electronic device to gather information and get comments on patient and service user care.

Between September and December 2015 we are recruiting university and college students who are able to help carry out patient experience research. By volunteering in this role, you will support us to find out the views and opinions of people using the hospital services. We use the information you gather to inform any necessary improvements to our work at Homerton. Research results are made public so that everyone can see which hospitals, clinics, wards and departments are providing the best patient care.

This opportunity will assist you in gaining the following skills:

  • Interpersonal/Confidence
  • Problem solving/Creativity
  • Analytical/Research

Training will be provided by the organisation for this position:

All volunteers will attend an induction session covering NHS essentials and the specifics of their role. Future training opportunities are planned.

Other benefits include:

- You will have the opportunity to learn about NHS systems and procedures which may benefit those seeking a career in the health service.

- You will get to meet and volunteer alongside NHS professionals and informally learn from their experiences and practice.

- You’ll get to share your ideas on ways in which the role could be developed or expanded based on your experience of volunteering as a Patient Experience Researcher. This could include helping with the analysis of survey results.

- You will be required to speak with sensitivity to a diverse range of people from a variety of backgrounds and with a broad range of experiences. This could help you develop your communication skills and your self confidence.

- You will have ongoing support from our volunteer programme staff.

- If you incur travel expenses through your volunteering, they will be reimbursed up to an agreed maximum on production of receipts.

- Volunteers with us for 6 months or more will be provided with a performance based reference.
